Let’s be clear, defunding Planned Parenthood is about controlling women! The unspoken bottom line is this – the fanatical, bible-banging, self-righteous, religious zealots don’t want women to have access to contraception because they believe that it’s “un-Christian” to have sex simply for the wonderful intimacy, the profound pleasure, and the deep self exploration. As Ricky Santorum explains: “….because it’s a license to do things in the sexual realm that is (sic) counter to how things are supposed to be.”
Planned Parenthood recently announced that due to the Iowa Republican legislation that rejects providing Medicaid funding to clinics that provide abortion, they will be closing four clinics (Sioux City, Burlington, Keokuk, Bettendorf) at the end of June. These four clinics serve 14,600 patients. The patients that will be impacted the most are people of color, young people, people with low to moderate income, and people living in rural areas. If there is legislation that prevents Title X funding, the situation will become even more dire. This article in the Atlantic does a great job of providing some history and possible consequences of defunding Planned Parenthood in Iowa.
Where are these women going to go? Senator Ernst isn’t giving any answers. Since the Republican Gynoticians are not providing any legitimate list of qualified clinics under their new State Sex Policing Plan, I’ve started a list of clinics. I’ve combined the three lists that I’ve seen (removed dentist offices, homeless shelters, and other laughable “clinics”) into an Excel spreadsheet so it can be sorted by city and clinics. In the list, I’ve included columns for, services provided, wait times, hours of operations, types of insurance accepting, etc.
Here is the link to the Iowa Clinic List on google docs.
If we could get Iowa Indivisible Individuals to help research, edit (delete/add clinics), and complete some of the questions, we will have proof that the Republican claim that there are other clinics that will be able to pick up PPs slack is BULLSHIT. Right now, I have it as “view” only but would love to have people help me complete it or send me information to add (traci@theVparty.com).
We should also document/track the issues that women and clinics are having after the closure of the four PPs. As Ashely Hinson herself said, she used PP when she first moved to Cedar Rapids because it took up to a year to get an appointment at an OB/Gyn and she could get the needed screenings/exams right away at PP. Thank you Ashley – for not giving 14,600 people the same luxury that you had!
If you need a good cry, watch this video that shows the impact of a world with PP and without PP.
