Iowa Republican Senators recently passed SF 471, which bans abortions after 20 weeks. Championing the bill is Senator Shannon Lundgren, a freshman legislator from Dubuque. During “debate”, a congressman asked Lundgren whether the bill would force his daughter, who is in her 21st week of pregnancy, to carry the baby to term if she had a miscarriage. Lundgren replied, “I understand what you’re saying. The fetus, baby, is not alive, I would concur, in that instance, if your daughter’s life was not in danger, that yes, she would have to carry that baby.”
As Iowastartingline writes: “There’s all kinds of problems with that idea, aside from the incredible cruelty to force a woman who’s had a traumatic experience to continue suffering through it because of some misinterpreted religious zeal. Medically, it’s downright dangerous, raising the risk of sepsis infection that can be deadly.”
While the bill has a provision for miscarriage, it appears that she nor the other Republicans were aware of this and did not correct her error or mention it during the committee hearing.
Making the bill even more draconian, SF 471 is an amended version of a “fetal heartbeat” bill and a bill that would allow the parents of an unmarried adult woman to prevent their pregnant adult daughter (pg. 7, lines 5,6,7) from getting an abortion. What would the parents force their slutty daughter to do if she became septic?
These bills are right-wing religious zealot attempts
to wrap their rosaries around our ovaries.
