Joe Biden has not yet entered the presidential race but his team is hinting that he will soon join the crowded field of Democrats running. While we wait in suspense for an announcement, it’s time to have the inevitable conversation.
Ignoring the hypocritical complaints coming from The Pussy Grabber Party, we need to put feelers out on how Democrats and Independents will receive and respond to “Creepy Uncle Joe” in the Democratic primaries and possibly in the presidential election.
There are two major ideological/cultural divides to consider here:
For younger, progressive Democrats, will Joe’s touchy communication style be a problem in today’s #MeToo era?
For older, working-class, moderate Democrats and Independents, does demonizing Joe’s innocent good-natured behavior become #MeToo over-reach?
Biden has been an equal opportunity “offender”, offering space-invading, skull-sniffing, ear-whispering personal support to men, women, and children alike. I can empathize, I’m a total hugger (I usually warn people before I go in for the squeeze).
There was a recent claim from Lucy Flores who stated she was uncomfortable with Biden’s actions towards her. Flores said Biden came up behind her, touched her shoulders and kissed the back of her head.
Biden’s response: “In my many years on the campaign trail and in public life, I have offered countless handshakes, hugs, expressions of affection, support and comfort. And not once – never – did I believe I acted inappropriately.”
Since Flores’ statement, there have been more women speaking out about Joe’s weird handsy behavior and how it made them uncomfortable. These women have all emphasized that there was nothing sexual in nature.
So while Joe’s actions are not applicable to #MeToo, he has said that he will try to do better in this new era of awareness and respect individual’s personal space!
For now this may have put a hitch in Joe’s get-a-long, but he will recover!
