It’s a tough galaxy!

In addition to the Repub politicians, I’ve also been very critical of the following types of Republicans:  the religious zealots and the racist alt-right.  However, I haven’t said much about Republicans who are none of those.  I’ve lived in Iowa most of my life, I have plenty of Republican friends and family members that do not share the same values as the righteous-right or the
far-right.  They are not xenophobic, racist, misogynist, anti-LGBTQ etc…. So as the Republican Party seems to be moving further to the right under Trump, how do my culturally liberal Republican friends and family members survive in this new, uncharted, far-right Trumpian Universe?

From what I can tell, they’ve taken Arthur Dent’s approach in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which is clutching a towel that has the words “Don’t Panic” on it. During Arthur’s travels through the dangerous new Galaxy that he found himself in, the “Don’t Panic” towel was hugely necessary for his survival.

Now, stick a babel fish in your ear and hear me out…

Background (since I use Gifs, I’m summarizing the 2005 movie):

Just before the earth is blown-up (how Dems felt the morning after the November 2016 election) by Vogons, Arthur Dent escapes earth’s destruction and eventually ends-up on a stolen spaceship with the vacuous, irresponsible, narcissistic, two-headed
President of the Galaxy – Zaphod Beeblebrox.   Zaphod, being aware that you can’t be president with a whole brain, created the second head (under his neck) so he could keep the parts of his
personality that “were not presidential”.
Zaphod is searching the galaxy for the answer to the “Question of Life.”  While accompanying President Zaphod on his mission, Arthur discovers that Zaphod is embroiled in intergalactic controversy and he struggles to understand and to handle/deal with Zaphod’s unhinged
actions as the corruption unfolds.
During their traverse through the universe, President Zaphod and Arthur encounter several challenges and enemies, many of which are in response to the
President’s own tweets – oops,
I mean – actions (i.e. stole a spaceship and ordered the destruction of earth).  In the end, Arthur realizes how NOT NORMAL President Zaphod is – and he jumps spaceship
(something like that anyway).

So how are my social liberal Republican friends and family members reacting to our racist, xenophobic, and misogynist President?

Similar to Arthur Dent’s mixed-reaction to narcissistic President of the Galaxy – Zaphod Beetlebox, I’m seeing at least four different ways in which Republicans are handling our half-wit President – Donald Tweetlebox.

They are finding ways  to Not Panic by doing at least one of the following:

  • They are throwing logic and reason
out into the vacuum of space and
    drinking the Trump Kool-Aid:

  • They have disengaged from politics
    and they are ignoring his tweets and his policies;

  • They  are doing some seriously-hard mental gymnastics in order to understand/agree and stick with DJT; and/or

  • They are skipping planet and leaving the Republican Party… because they would much rather be happy – than trying to convince themselves that –
    Trump’s bullshit is alright!

Last night’s special election for a U.S. House seat in Ohio’s District 12 (Trump won the District by 11 points and it has been Republican for 35 years) is TOO CLOSE TO CALL this morning.  It is likely that the Republican who is ahead of the
Democrat by 0.9% points will win – and then it starts all over again in November.  There are 68 Republican-held House seats that are more favorable to Democrats than
Ohio’s District 12.  Democrats only
need to pick up 23 seats to retake
the House.

In conclusion, I have this to say to my socially liberal Republican friends and family members who choose to stay in the far-right Trumpian Republican Party
– I love you but…

it’s time to throw in the “Don’t Panic” towel – and start PANICKING!
